ITAP of a Kauai Hawaiian monk seal pup a few years ago, about six weeks apart... Annie and I had been on Kauai in July, celebrating our anniversary, and got to see this little baby monk seal at less than a day old. We went back in September to see the mother and pup pair still together near the end of the weaning period.

Hmmm… I shoot with a Nikon, but I know when I was getting started with a DSLR back in 2008/2009, multiple pro friends recommended that I get a “superzoom” which was the 18-200mm VRII at the time, and I later got an 18-300mm VRII. The idea is twofold… it reduces the wear and tear on your body from swapping lenses, and covers a wide range of conditions from the wide angle to the 200mm zoom. Canon definitely has a similar lens, and I think they run about $1k. Pretty much, once you put it on the camera, you don’t need to take if off until you upgrade the camera. I still carry it in my bag today, mounted to my second body so whatever I am shooting with my primary camera, I can quickly grab that if the conditions need the opposite: a rainbow over a mother and pup while I’m using a 200-500mm lens, or jump to 300mm if a monk seal pops its head up while I’m shooting a wide angle of a beach.

ahhh! this is the post i’ve been searching for! thank you so much! i will def look into it! love the idea. i have a 100-400 i was testing out, but i like your idea much better — i’d love to NOT swap lenses all the time! lol i may find and older style as a second body and get an adapter that way i have that second camera…maybe. it’s not a bad idea to have one. thank you so much for always providing your photographers insights! i really appreciate it! 1000 $degen 🤍 @cantus-eth — jason has some great ideas in his above posts! 🤍 lmk what you think!
