ITAP of a pair of albatross during their mating dance. Much like the whales returning to Hawaii waters, this is the time of year when albatross return to their nesting colonies on Oahu and Kauai, and these majestic birds can be seen flying out over the waves.

My move to New York Coty prompted a period of change, but the drive to escape to the lovely natural places, to listen to the water rush over ancient rocks, to gaze into dark and deep shadows in the woods remains. A super rare coincidence while traveling on Kauai... I actually spotted a Hawaiian monk seal who recently hauled out on a beach, and when I identified him, I realized that it was RK58, the baby Hawaiian monk seal that I featured in my edition, The Rescue. ITAP of an unidentified male Hawaiian monk seal who showed up at one of our pup sites when I was on Oahu this summer. Male monk seals frequently show up at pup sites, perhaps trying to get an inside track on making friends with mom... but mother monk seals definitely do not want visitors when they are nursing a pup.

A super rare look at a previous life... I've been asked a few times today what caused my total knee replacement, and while it certainly wasn't any one thing, there is no denying that my athletic pursuits over 40+ years took a toll. Pulled a few of the old photos together, but it's an incomplete picture (I don't happen to have any photos of me playing soccer, football, or rugby around at the moment), but I was always up for a game, no matter the sport. And I still ski... I got my annual ski trip in to Steamboat back in March this year, and even got a few powder days. However, that third powder day in a row was more than I could handle, and while I made the decision to get this knee replacement done a few years ago, missing a powder day was a good reminder that none of us is promised tomorrow. Looking forward to a full recovery and getting back to the activities I love... though, maybe not out on the fields.

ITAP before and after my total knee replacement earlier this week. So far, so good on the recovery… lots of pain, which is to be expected after a major surgery, but pain that is headed for a positive outcome. Those of you that have met me IRL (especially over the last year or so) certainly noticed how much pain that right knee was causing me. Once the recovery and rehab is complete, hopefully I can get back to on the trail and hiking to destinations with amazing views to share!

To wrap up my Foto Friday, let’s go with one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. On New Year’s Eve in 2017, there was a bench collapse on the Big Island which severed a lava tube, creating this lava hose spilling millions of gallons of molten lava into the ocean, with explosive results. Stay tuned for my AMA in about an hour, at 4 PM Eastern time.

The next big milestone of my photography career was made possible by web3, when @johnknopf helped organize the Foto Gallery during NFT NYC, and asked me to submit three of my photos to be displayed at the @superchief in New York. Ke’e Tower and The Survivor were two of the images I chose. This was an absolutely epic day, with my images on display with some of the legends of photography!
