On a February night in Waikiki almost 15 years ago, I was late for an event and carrying my camera… it was so overcast when I stepped outside, I almost took the camera back upstairs. But I was late, so I hurried to the event. This was the sunset sky that night. A super rare sky… I have never seen anything like it since. Good thing I still had my camera.

ITAP ten years ago of this Honu on Maui… usually, I prefer the wet Honu, fresh from the ocean, taking a nap on the beach. This guy had been there since 7 a.m. and when the setting sun slipped beneath the cloud layer, and bathed him in a little light, he finally started moving... further up the beach, away from the water. In this case, I really liked the contrast of colors between him, the rocky cliff behind him, the sand, and the driftwood. Part of The Honu Collection… link 👇🏼.

A February hike out to Ka’ena Point a few years ago included the “discovery” (first time he was seen in the main Hawaiian islands) of this beautiful juvenile seal, with a cookie cutter shark bite on his face. He was only seen one or two more unconfirmed times that week, but our volunteers on Kauai identified him as one of their resident seals a few years ago.
