hmm how i’m building a social network app, but grappling with the fact that mobile phones and social media, as they exist today, have contributed to an epidemic of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and disconnection. i’m driven to build it better — to help us rediscover real connection and community and get more value out of it. and i believe decentralized social is essential to get there. but candidly the constant financialization in crypto sometimes makes it feel like a worse version of web2, which does. wears me down. sometimes i wonder if i’d do more good logging off entirely and pouring my energy into local, IRL community instead. smaller scale, sure, but potentially more fulfilling. i choose to stay because i believe in what i’m (we’re) building. i trust myself to stay true to my principles, and i know my drive to build better for far more than financial reasons is incredibly powerful. xx

this hits hard. building in the space while also critiquing it is the most honest path forward. thanks for voicing this

This resonates. 😬 One idea I like for how to get URL more IRL connection is city managers. Growth is not just onboarding, but finding ways to embed FC into every day life in local culture. And culture is block by block, not city by city. City managers could be hired in major cities to figure out the block by block adoption. It could include event planning, community involvement, sponsorships, volunteering, local partnerships (small businesses, chambers of commerce, running events, meetups, local influencers). Not centered around the software application or the technology or even FarCon, which feels like a one-off event, but focused on building it into every day life. Wallet, games, sports, media, etc. The building blocks are there. Just needs embedding. Add some local sales engineers to help non-tech local businesses with the embedding. FC could be built into the grass roots of society. You’d also know what’s working and not working in ultra-high-res.

I think loneliness gets disguised moreso as a lack of social media-pushing endorphins from either not seeing a new fav influencer post or not seeing good content that generates that endorphin buzz we all know. We come seeking that buzz that we once got, quickly realize we're not going to get it and realize we coulda been out and about with friends/family instead and gotten it the old fashioned way. OR we come and do get it but then inevitably get more sucked in and more dependent upon this media and want even more. As a content generator you're definitely put into a no-win situation here. If you generate more content that waters down the good content you do something of a disservice to users who expect grade A content constantly to feed the growing appetite for the endorphin rush. But if you wait longer to perhaps generate even better content you can and post less you risk pushing your users to other endorphin-providing media who want that rush now now NOW. IMO the 'fix' is to have more FarCon IRL events.
