It all depends on how strong are your beliefs, your communication with your family and also your oratory. 
But sometimes there are some battles not worth fighting for.

i wake up, i work hard, i show up for my family and friends, and i do my best to live a good life

that is more convincing to them than anything i'd say

I believe families are complex, and each individual's relationship with their family can vary greatly. 
When I refer to "battles not worth fighting," I mean classic verbal arguments. 
I completely agree that actions speak louder than words, especially when the other side isn't widely open to discussion.
