I consider the images and words that I shared leading up to my latest drop as content. Curating the narrative that surrounded the art.

🧭Recalibrating 🌍Worldbuilding

We need a best of both worlds strategy to bridge art & content:

Content should not be considered art. Content is what is used to promote art (or other value encapsulant, eg YouTube videos).

Monetizing content via coins or low cost mint meta is great! It leads to sustainable creation, larger audiences, & the micro transaction layer that has been missing from the internet.

But this should not be conflated with low supply, higher cost “art”. Mixing the two makes collectors value art less & artists feel like they’re not appreciated.

The key issue here is that we’re not aligned between creators, collectors, & consumers.

Collectors want collectibles with long term value potential. This aligns with artists, but is a small pool.

Consumers want coins they can speculate with. This aligns with artists wanting to make a living from a larger pool, but can leave Artists feeling undervalued.

Content =/= art

No, they are not synonymous. 

Content is what has been created as a filler mechanism to keep up with the web2 algorithms. 

Eg, the “post” is content, because we must post many times a day to be considered relevant. It is derivative of the art itself (the underlying asset). 

Sharing a photo as a post (or cast) becomes content because of the container and context of being on social media. 

Art is the photo itself, which took many hours to capture, edit, and create, with the eye of producing beauty or conveying emotion from the artist.

not all content is art, but all art is content.

I also am curious if the purpose of the content then can make it art? and is part of content' initial purpose part of the content itself.

If art has something to say, and it always does, then it’s necessarily content.

I think "most" art can be made into content and certainly a lot of content is incredibly "artful" - I think there is a slew of up and coming artists whose social media content production is part of their art practice (like Maya Man, who I just interviewed for the pod, and Molly Soda)

If everything can be tokenized, then everything can be content. But not everything that’s content is art.

Art’s got that extra layer- intent, emotion, depth, feeling, meaning. Content well.. can be just about anything.

Content implies simply feeding a platform with whatever.
It is seen from the platform point of view, it is the Instagram vocabulary that we escaped from.

I wouldn’t say all content is art, but art can be content too. I don’t think there is right or wrong.

To the algorithm, a twofold yes.

sama wrote a blog pre-Dall-E release which I delivered a paper on 3 years ago. In it, he wrote from the algorithmic perspective. Instead of a rebuttal which is the usual 'artist' view, I agreed with him. I was not romantic about art, and today, neither is he about AI.

For the artist, not all content is art
For the audience, any content can  become art

No one is wrong or right. I see why both can lose meaning
