this "Summer Without Sex" article's focus on celibacy as a path to wellness/happiness and means to fight the patriarchy reads as... misguided??? 1. article conveniently forgets the female-sexual-empowerment-as-a-means-to-fight-the-patriarchy movement 2. which (along with traditional gender norms and the desire to fit in with peers) influences women to have unwanted, consensual sex 3. unwanted, consensual sex is associated with lower happiness (for both men and women) 4. meanwhile, it is well established that people who have more sex and better quality sex are happier 5. strongest moderator of sex quality is relationship closeness and the happiness maximizing # of sexual partners is 1 6. therefore women optimizing for happiness should not necessarily aspire for a summer without sex, but instead for a summer without unwanted sex OR with sex with the right person idk what the patriarchy has to do with it https://www.thecut.com/article/women-celibate-dating-sex.html

Yeah I’ll be taking the opposite approach this summer — and still doing the work to diminish the patriarchy. (A lil lost on that connection as well)

One interesting trend that I think it may be overlooked is that 1 or 2 generations down the road, the sexual revolution may have actually decreased the amount of sex that people are having. The numbers are pretty clear if you look at countries like Japan, and Korea or Gen Z

I don’t think I’ve ever been to this site but they decided I reached my limit of monthly free reads and can’t read it. That annoys me to no end.

this article mentions patriarchal factors as one of many reasons for celibacy, and is pretty clear on why? also the leap from sex positivity being empowering to unwanted sex is a large one

Super interesting read. (your cast, not the article — which I don’t really wanna read)

I appreciate that more people see celibacy more as a voluntary choice rather than a passive choice due to their inability of finding the right partner (which is often attributed to unattractiveness, for male at least). The dangerous path is seeing avoidance as the ultimate solution to bad sexual experiences

Anything fighting the patriarchy is misguided in my book. 📖🤭 but celibacy can totally contribute to wellness - the scientific community just hasn’t documented it! Been documented for millennia in the religious community, though, with Buddhist monks, catholic nuns, etc.

100 $degen for talking about sex here People seem to be afraid of it and i’m not sure why it is not acceptable to bring sex to the conversation if great sex = increased quality of life. As a brazilian, not sure there’s anyone more comfy to talk about sex than we are but still..

The website didn't load for me but. From your post I think the patriarchy is mentioned due to some cultures. That the parents look down on their children if they aren't virgen. But it's interesting how different cultures are following the same awful idea

Less?! Whoever wrote the article is a bigot. Of course unwanted sex is bad.. always was. But people should bang more if they actually want a happier life, wtf. Science says so. Oh and also.. Celibacy is against human nature ! Religion has fucked with our minds for too long
