SOME things, like neoliberalism, you can blame on BOTH American political parties. But the “War On Drugs” is a Republican child. Richard Nixon’s domestic policy advisor confessed in 1994 that it targeted rights-seeking blacks and anti-war hippies, their political enemies: https://harpers.org/archive/2016/04/legalize-it-all/ Should Jimmy Carter have done more with his supermajority to end the drug war? Sure. Carter’s key legacy is actually neoliberal deregulation. Reagan caught the drug culture-war pass from Nixon and the neoliberal pass from Carter like a champion wide receiver. I grew up in the 1980s. Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign was ubiquitous. Drug abuse has *never* varied with race or income-level. Reagan’s super-severe crack VS powder cocaine punishment caused decades of black family separation and federal handouts to corporate prisons. Marijuana prosecution also depopulated disproportionately black areas. This is partly why today’s black family wealth 1/8 that of whites.

Perhaps it was their child but fully adopted by the Dems afterwards. The Crime Bill, increases to police and mass incarceration funding, all the continued corruption and meddling in foreign countries. Why not blame that on both parties?

Yep. And the slight gains that progressive drug policy has made are now being undone by recovery capitalists who know which buttons to mash to get people to stop thinking and start feeling.

I know what Nixon said. The war on drugs began decades before Nixon as a way to target minorities, it just picked up that name (war on drugs) later. The war has usually been bipartisan, even 2day with new fentanyl legislation.Biden sponsored Reagan's mand. minimums in 86' and don't forget the democrat's 94' crime bill. Both parties have a lot of work to do to even began to atone for the massive amount of suffering and death they have directly caused and continue to cause through prohibition.

Same case in the Philippines, but the War on Drugs mainly affected the poor or under the line of poverty this is why the previous president got convicted and now investigated by the ICC. 500 $farther

idk, as a taxpayer in any country, I'd rather my government try to deal with a problem rather than to look the other way and spend tax money on medical treatments, with no long term solution in sight 🤷‍♂️

It's a big, horrifying part of it. I am constantly disgusted that we still have so many people in our prison system for marijuana possession, while others are making millions off of now legal THC dispensaries. 200 $farther

not really. the war on drugs started with targeting the Chinese in San Francisco in the late 1800's. sure, republicans ramped it up and kept it going, but really didn't start with them.

You’re not wrong. But Harry Anslinger and J Edgar Hoover were bipartisan, working at the behest of intelligence agencies and the DuPont corporation (outlawing hemp in favor of petroleum based synthetics). It’s not even a bipartisan issue, it has more to do with the nature of power held in the corporate-financial-intelligence nexus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_J._Anslinger

Drug war created by Republicans. Both parties share blame on some issues. Reagan worsened it. Inequity persists.
