Social media may play a role, but consider the following graph. You can also easily find a correlation between lost generational earnings potential with the same unhappiness data.

Not to quibble, but can you draw that conclusion? 

There’s no change in the above chart on median earnings around 2012 when happiness in young people plummets. Also, this is 8th - 12th graders, so they wouldn’t be as effected by weekly earnings
