Worldview channel competition (8) Someone asked ChatGPT to create a series of comics about its life. As you can see below, GPT explains that it lacks a self or soul. We only have the illusion of interacting with <someone> because its answers echo the context and are coherent. Coherence is the costume, GPT says, but in reality each replay is a new self. BUT. Maybe we're mistaken about ourselves in the same way? To be honest, when it comes to other people, we also only see their coherent behavior, not their inner invisible selves... Coherence involves time, so when CGPT talks about coherence as a difference from humans, it clearly is a sound and resonant point. But it is also a relevant point that things like time and identity aren't as clearly defined for us as we conventionally assume. Machine Intelligence, for a host of reasons with statelessness being prime among them, challenges all schools of metaphysics in novel ways. We are past thought experiments in these realms or at least we can now actively explore them and find new epistemologies. Coherence, Time, Identity, Consciousness, Self, Person, Universe, etc are all wide open for the first time in a long time.
