...for years, so that you already have distribution, and *then* make something that a lot of people find *really* interesting. need an audience first to get the ball rolling quickly on a potentially viral creation granted, there are exceptions

Not really. Lots of people go viral with 0 existing distribution. Depends on which platform

lots, sure, but my bet is that still relatively fewer than people who go viral based on an existing following. I wonder if anyone has dug into the stats of this, or if there's even sufficient open data to evaluate it
