Life on the Mississippi Mark Twain recounts his experience as a riverboat pilot. It’s mostly memoir, but it’s also part travelogue since the job is necessarily mobile. I read this last because I thought I would like it less than the travel books. The opposite proved true. He clearly knows and loves the technical minutiae of piloting, the Mississippi, and its denizens. This is what he wrote just before Huck Finn, and his writing is in top form. Five stars.

It's very preventable. ETH can leapfrog from being Sony to Nvidia if they wanted, btw.

If your venture scale outcome requires other venture scale outcomes to be built in your ecosystem, don’t procrastinate on nurturing the ecosystem. It’s a lot harder than you think.

missing the forest for the trees. if we had permissionless anon downvotes, there wouldn't even need to be mid anon content at all. but no, cabal needs their thumb on the scale, and can't take the upfront reputational challenge. even @dwr.eth recognizes that CT OGs had no upfront challenge to farm clout, because all bagholders like their posts by default. lock in a legitimate contest and another pressure bleeder, or stick with the "this is fine" bs

Day seven: Freedom by Sebastian Junger Not his strongest work, but not bad. Explicitly, it’s a story of a weird, long hike he took with some friends interspersed with characteristically well researched and written information about, well
freedom. It was most enjoyable for me as the implicit story of his midlife crisis. He was clearly in a weird place emotionally. I suspect he was processing some actual PTSD from the War days and also probably feeling a bit uncomfortable about having achieved such success on such a sensitive topic. You get the feeling he was trying to recreate the feeling of being part of a small, fiercely cohesive, tightly aligned group as a form of therapy. Or at least as a hit of his preferred drug. It’s a relatively weak point in his bibliography and I suggest Tribe instead as a direct comparable. And don’t go digging deep into the minor titles at all until you’ve read the Perfect Storm and War. Three stars by Sebastian Junger standards.

Day one, review one: The Geek Way It’s well articulated, it’s by an industry-adjacent person, and it’s pro tech. But it’s not going to surprise anyone already steeped in startup culture. It advises a four prong recipe for building a successful company culture: - make data driven decisions - promote agency/ownership - move fast - be super open If you’re looking at that and going “hell yeah” then it’s safe to skip this one. But it’d be a good handbook for teaching newcomers and outsiders. And it’d make a great passive aggressive birthday gift for a cofounder who thinks his “Steve Jobs level product intuition” trumps your “AB testing data” Four stars for its type, a solid 101 on healthy tech company culture
