Animals. As a concept, they become less prominent in your mind as you age (exception being pets). A 12 year old is clearly much more likely to be thinking about e.g. zebras, orca whales, tigers, etc. than a 30 year old. Lesson in there.

I’m watching this North Face YouTube video, these ppl are skiing in Antarctica, bunch of penguins show up on the screen. I realize, man I haven’t really thought about penguins in a long time. Pudgy Penguins don’t count because they don’t feel like penguins, they feel more like generic cartoon anthropomorphic characters.

Unless you’re a 30 year old with kids and then animals are back on the menu.

i read this as specialization and a feeling of separation from the natural world coming with age in most modernized societies. Recently i came across a "complete list of animals" online. It had thousands of different animals but under the H tab humans were suspiciously missing. I also wonder if field zoologists, marine biologists, or bird watchers think about animals more then 12 year olds because that is what they specialized in or less because for them maybe the concepts have become abstract from the creatures they represent

time to think about animals way more. orcas are held in tiny tanks all over the world, they are intelligent family oriented animals, plucked from the wild or raised in captivity and often held in solitary confinement for years and years.. gut wrenchingly cruel. rip kiska, lolita, and so many others 💔

I think this an innate and universal part of being human, for most of human history learning about animals and your immediate natural environment was essentially to your survival, so childhood curiosity about nature is programmed in. Scary and sad to think about a future of biodiversity loss and children learning about rhinos or koalas in the same way we learnt about dodos or woolly mammoths.

I had a similar thought yesterday about how giraffes have earned an outsized share of attention (especially among children) relative to their population, just because they are fucking weird I guess.

Children are naturally curious and animals spark their imagination, As we grow older our sense of wonder and awe diminishes making animals less captivating and network states more interesting 🤣🥲
