I didn't obsess over permissionless platforms so I could ask permission 🤷‍♂️

What's frustrating? The fact that we need permission from a small handful of mods to access a supposed permissionless social network. I don't care about being "in the club", I just want to read and talk about things I find interesting.

"Ohh but channels are like twitter spaces now!" Ok WHY? Twitter spaces suck ( a few people talking while everybody is just in the audience). Why is this the direction? What wasn't working with channels that they needed to be like Twitter spaces? Was it merely the spam / low effort content?

"Channels are walled gardens"

1. Everyone can read and reply to channel casts

2. Most people appear above the fold when replying

3. The cast data is on the protocol, you're able to build a client or another experience with it that you think is better

4. There are plenty of channels experimenting with token and NFT gating.

5. I'll repeat: *there is no distribution boost to casting in a channel*. It's strictly if you want to take the time to start building relationships in that community (which you can start today by replying to any cast in the channel).

6. A generic topic / hashtag like #ai, #food, #founders is not a community. It's an attempt at boosting distribution. And we're specifically not boosting distribution. So casting in your home feed (to your followers) will get you the same distribution to people who already choose to follow you.

Re Twitter Space — It’s an analogy to help people understand.

We ran channels for a year life hashtags, very few ended up good. People treated them like hashtags vs. communities. So we were unable to boost casts in channels.

A handful, though that is irrelevant. Do we need permission to cast in channels or not?  It's analogous to every subreddit becoming private. It's not great.

ok so? More general channels (as you described, /food) will obviously be a catchall for generic casts. But more specific communities can emerge. /crypto vs /ethfinance for example.
