the problem is of course foreign entities' ability to influence users through choosing which content to show them as long as we have big data algos that run on huge data centers controlled by a single entity every other country *should* view foreign social platforms as a threat to national security

"the problem is of course foreign entities' ability to influence users through choosing which content to show them" The irony of China doing exactly that, and Westerners calling it the 'Great Firewall of China'. Red scare propaganda.

i guess the difference is that the west hasn't really had a history of banning apps like that until recently (that i'm aware of at least)

Social media is a relatively new phenomenon in the grand scope of things. Much of the opinion from Leftists is that the ban has little to do with China itself (again, just a red scare scapegoat), but of the increasing support for Palestine, which overall has seen vast censorship. Since Tiktok isn't US-owned and doesn't censor these views as much as other US-owned platforms, the only "logical" solution is to ban it. The USA is no stranger to silencing Leftist/Socialist/Communist discourse though.

In fact, the USA itself created a loophole for government employees to use Tiktok to influence China and others. "TikTok ban for thee but not for me" https://www.kenklippenstein.com/p/biden-administration-quietly-carves

interesting perspective. i'm sure that's one factor of many i think the bottom line is algorithmic feeds make people a lot more susceptible to influence (and even censorship) because it normalizes consuming content from sources that you don't explicitly trust or subscribe to under the guise of content discovery over time this can radicalize anybody in any direction the platform chooses. as a country it just doesn't make sense to allow that to happen and China was just the first to realize this
