the problem is of course foreign entities' ability to influence users through choosing which content to show them as long as we have big data algos that run on huge data centers controlled by a single entity every other country *should* view foreign social platforms as a threat to national security

and this problem can be localized to individuals as well most of the time the entities controlling the algorithms don't align with your interests, so by consuming algorithmic content you are leaving yourself vulnerable to manipulation

"the problem is of course foreign entities' ability to influence users through choosing which content to show them" The irony of China doing exactly that, and Westerners calling it the 'Great Firewall of China'. Red scare propaganda.

It's actually both spying on individuals and influence. A foreign adversary knowing intimate details including locations data of every person can exploit this information in precise but devastating ways. (ie. asymmetric warfare even tho the adversary is a superpower.) It is an interesting conundrum. In an open free society this is viewed as a choice each individual should make for themselves. Most are willing to give up this privacy in exchange for product conveniences.

the countries that ban free speech use ours against us and we don't have to let them. unfortunately if you don't vaccinate your population with knowledge they are susceptible to brainwashing from that garbage they see blasted through them in the form of dopamine hits on their phone and if the people pushing the algo on the other end mean to do us harm (i promise infinity percent chinas goals do not align with ours) it's bad. we can hold an american entity pushing bad info accountable we can't hold a foreign entity accountable meaningfully.

the solution lies in cryptographically verifiable algorithms running on neutral infrastructure. power should flow from math, not authority
