i think there is a fundamental misunderstanding among the general population about how a foreign social platform could be a threat to national security

if you search "rednote my data" anywhere it seems like people think their governments are worried about foreign entities spying on its people - no wonder nobody is taking this seriously

the problem is of course foreign entities' ability to influence users through choosing which content to show them

as long as we have big data algos that run on huge data centers controlled by a single entity every other country *should* view foreign social platforms as a threat to national security

The irony of China doing exactly that, and Westerners calling it the 'Great Firewall of China'. Red scare propaganda.

Social media is a relatively new phenomenon in the grand scope of things.  Much of the opinion from Leftists is that the ban has little to do with China itself (again, just a red scare scapegoat), but of the increasing support for Palestine, which overall has seen vast censorship. Since Tiktok isn't US-owned and doesn't censor these views as much as other US-owned platforms, the only "logical" solution is to ban it.

The USA is no stranger to silencing Leftist/Socialist/Communist discourse though.

i guess the difference is that the west hasn't really had a history of banning apps like that until recently (that i'm aware of at least)
