When you ask your kids to get off the screens (iPad, video games) and they respond that they see you staring at a screen all day, what’s a good comeback?

Time on screens is not all created equally. Time spent working on code or building a plan in Excel is different than spending time on games & even time on social media. To me the answer begins there… dad may be in front of a screen all day but he’s also “at work”. If your kids were old enough to have distance learning then they’ve experienced similar time in front of screens and may remember it’s not all fun & games. They frequently think it is because they only use the screens for entertainment.

My kids are still young. But they are allowed to call me out for my screen when we are at the table (e.g. dinner) so giving them power to call you out in certain situations can make it easier for them to accept you calling them out.

Depending on ages I’d say Jawa’s response is solid, if they’re a little younger as my kiddos are I’d tell them that there are many things that are different for grown ups than they are for kids. For instance - Bedtimes are usually different for grown ups and kids, as are tv shows and movies. There are also words grown ups can use that kids will get in trouble for using. Screens is just another one of those things that are different for kids vs grown ups. Especially when using screens is part of a grown up’s job.

I don’t have kids so only have experience as a child in this scenario so I think if I had said this to my dad in my youth he would have said something like, “what the fuck did you say to me you little shit”
