Well today's "conservatives" might be the Obama voters of 2008/2012. This is what political realignment does.

I'd love to see farther back to where conservatives were before Trump. Notably it's not just liberals, look at how moderates are shifting.

Trump is probably the main trigger, but the party and its media organs are run by a managerial class that is ideologically very internationalist and anti-protectionist, so they go into overdrive in reaction to Trump and that probably trickles down to the broader party.
