took the day off the internet to start cleaning up my data hoard, update apps, etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ things were feeling unstable and i'm starting to have a hard time finding files in the chaos of everything i keep dumping in the downloads folder (╥_╥) anyone have some good digital life organization tricks?

Only keep files that spark joy! Jokes aside, I remember using Hazel for macOS years ago to clean out my download files based on rules. Once I started going through different work laptops and personal laptops at a faster pace I could manage, that went out the window and I just dump my download folder into my NAS which has several _unsorted (work laptop 2020) folders that are just collecting digital dust.

even marie kondo couldn't keep up with konmari in the end (๑>ᴗ<๑) it's gotten so bad for me that i've been having to use the color tags to tag final versions of things (⌒_⌒;) i don't know why i feel like i need to keep all previous versions but yeah, the dump to nas method is sort of what i've been doing too but lately, i've been generating/downloading so many files that are needed in the present that that doesn't really work

Have you considered file versioning with git-lfs? Assuming the data is too large to store on GitHub or similar service, you could self host a GitHub clone on your NAS. I don’t do this but it’s something I should too as I have the same tendency to keep versions that way, but mostly from not knowing git at the time

hmm that might be a good idea. i think i have one-click gitea install on my nas ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ tho i think i'm trying to figure out a simple system for my computer. in my mind, my nas is post computer archiving not for immediately accessible files

Another option could be to use your Desktop or even self made folder to throw all your working files into, organized by subfolders. And of course hide the desktop icons so no one sees the mess but you and Finder. If naming conventions are somewhat consistent, like for generated files, you could auto move them from Downloads to your project folder with Hazel and adjust rules as things change. Generally speaking I like sticking to Apples provided default tools but also try not to limit myself to them as I’m not their target audience. But I do like simple so I aim for at most one added tool when building out my workflows. Which is what I think it all comes down to, knowing best how you and your brain works and looking for tools that do that thinking for you.

unfortunately, i've never been good at having consistent naming conventions. for example, i do a lot of my work on my ipad and then airdrop stuff to my mac and they always have names like untitled_project 1, untitled_artwork 2, untitled 3, etc etc. then i also have tons of screenshot_ and img_ files and internet downloads with hash names on top of that (╥_╥) i might play around with smart folders to auto filter by type and order by date. that might at least give me a bit of structure to see things clearly
