LinkedIn recently (and quietly) added this data tracking setting and turned it on by default for everyone. 

It’s a dark pattern that and some of their own employees have been calling them out (link below).

If you prefer not to give away all of your data to LinkedIn’s new product development efforts, you can and should opt out.

Oh interesting. I remember no longer using it shortly after the acquisition but maybe they wanted me to connect with LinkedIn or something I refused to do.

The 2020 article supposedly outlines the history. 

It looks like it was allowed to decay for some time but officially sunsetted in 2020

“LinkedIn itself went through a process of cutting off a lot of apps that tapped into its social graph, essentially building the walls around its garden a little higher to encourage more people to pay up for LinkedIn’s premium tiers, or at least visit an increasingly more limited version of the site as free users to bring it more traffic (and possibly get upsold to the premium tiers).”
