this is making the rounds in all my group chats, tech and non-tech alike. my initial reaction is that i don’t think the AI friend is the root issue. with crisis text line data and social platforms that detect and flag suicidal ideation, idk how character.ai’s system didn’t flag this as an high-risk user.

10 years ago this kid would’ve had the same exchange with a person, not an AI, on Tumblr, with the same result.

Neither is really an excuse though. Just like people on Tumblr should learn not to be shitty. People creating AIs intended to have relationships with teens should train them not to be shitty.

I broadly don’t believe the internet can stop people from being suicidal. I think it’s up to that persons IRL community to get them the support they need.
