this is making the rounds in all my group chats, tech and non-tech alike.

my initial reaction is that i don’t think the AI friend is the root issue.

with crisis text line data and social platforms that detect and flag suicidal ideation, idk how character.ai’s system didn’t flag this as an high-risk user.

here looks like "Daenerys Targaryen" tried to prevent suicide. But it can happen eventually because ppl with the suicide risk are more likely to use chatbots, trust artificial friends etc. 

in Nexus Harari is making a very strong case that Facebook algorithm (not the company) already was to be partially blamed for the Burma ethnic violence in 2016, and it was much simpler than today's LLM

Being a parent is hard but it's our job to keep kids safe, especially at that age.

That's why limiting access to tech is important.

Guess what's also important, limiting access to guns.

10 years ago this kid would’ve had the same exchange with a person, not an AI, on Tumblr, with the same result.

Those messages are brutal to read. I'm glad the AI didn't overtly encourage it but I feel like anyone motivated enough could manipulate it into 'encouraging' their suicide. Really hard to tell what kind of effect AI is going to have on mental health as AI 'relationships' become more common.

we as community must build IRL experiences equally or better than online experiences.

So…. Troubled teen had unfettered access to a loaded gun and an AI chatbot and people are examining if the chatbot was the issue? 🤦‍♂️
