If optimism were to go down, would Farcaster also go down? I understand OP chain is used to associate FIDs with Ethereum addresses - I assume this would fail if OP had a liveness issue?

"Go down" as in permanently deleted, or just a temporary downtime? If hubs do not have access to OP, they will not be able to parse onchain tx, such as account creation, signers approvals, storage units purchases. But the content would still be live, and existing users would be able to interact.

Signing up and recovering accounts would go down, everything else would be fine till the network comes back up

The account creation would be yes! Also creating new signers and anything to do with that. The protocol itself and existing keys can then still be used via Hubs as associated Keys and FIDs are also on Hubs Reference: https://docs.farcaster.xyz/learn/what-is-farcaster/accounts

I think it depends on what "go down" means. There are situations where you could still read from the chain but not produce new blocks.

How are messages created? After watching the videos created by farcaster it appears that when a message is created the private key is used to sign it. This allows the network to validate this actually came from said user. Where does it go to validate the farcaster ID is registered to the signing account? L2 smart contr
