whenever i've tried to discuss the tech with ppl i know (also left-leaning), they get very defensive bc it challenges/potentially threatens the illusion of security they feel with the status quo (that they also complain about.) so the response is to point at the ponzis and the enviro as a way to shut the convo down

yeah it's the horseshoe theory with how the gen x left actually shares more in common with the libertarian right of today in terms of anti-globalist, anti-mainstream, etc. it's kind of a mess (maybe intentionally so) to frame things as oppositional sides and clouds ppls judgment on so many things

I think some of it is also the far right element of certain crypto communities (usually from Bitcoin maxis) that tends to make the headlines. Elizabeth Warren's misinformation doesn't help either...

it's like the old saying for them: "better the devil you know than the devil you don't"

when i first got into this, i thought i could convince ppl overnight by demoing it through my own usage but i've learned that it's just going to be a slow process (i know ppl who still don't trust online shopping at all (⌒_⌒;))

Yeah this is exactly my experience. All day every day it’s “the system is broken, banks are broken, governments are fascist, artists are exploited, voting is insecure, sending money abroad is impossible” and then you mention a blockchain solution to any of these and they’re like “sure bro”
