Should I do it? The first two chapters grabbed me, but at nearly 1000 pages, the road ahead is daunting.

ngl i didnโ€™t like it i generally do not think murakami is a great fiction writer itโ€™s the same themes, symbols, mythology, and parallel timeline that meets or crosses at some point in the book structure for at least two of his books (this one and kafka on the shore)

Interesting thank you. I have only read colourless taukuru tazaki, and I loved it, but I admit that might have been partly due to the novelty of such a distinct style. Iโ€™ve had similar experiences with other authors (Douglas Coupland, Tom Robbins, Chuck Palahniuk)โ€ฆ

But eventually coming to see their style as a post-modern schtick that grows tiring

itโ€™s very fun imo the first run through. any of those books, but yes it does get tiring unless youโ€™re totally cool with that and just want some junk food reading ๐Ÿ˜ then this is totally fine. maybe a bit too long tbh if thatโ€™s what you want

Yes, the value is in the novelty, less than the story. OTOH, Fight Club for example, is at least legitimately an incredible story. I think sometimes these authors should just tell the story and leave the schtick aside.
