probably a lot. customization sure but to have a truly replaceable hero probably requires same of the world they’re in

Really? I know very little of gaming tech but imagine setting up for one custom asset (admittedly the most sophisticated one) would be easier to integrate than building to allow a whole raft of custom items.

meant more for story/universe to have the intended effect (would be odd to customize self but feel less connected to character/world) tech limitations would also beg constraints (model sizes, resource bandwidth for mmo’s, etc) but that’s less a barrier
