It’s great that a meaningful response to what is happening in California and the West generally is subject to our country engaging in a completely toxic culture war bullshit discourse. Would be easier to pass a law to let drivers ram climate protesters blocking a road than to rally an optimistic, tech forward movement in the country that is remotely serious about the challenges we face. Easy to talk about controlled burns, fire dept budgets, but man we don’t even have consensus on warming. Dark days, praying for friends and colleagues facing these horrors. This clip shook me

Everyone's a techno-optimist until they're faced with an event like this. A very influential moment of my young adult life was trying to care for my dad, who had a terminal lung condition and was on supplemental oxygen, during the Black Saturday bushfires here in Victoria in 2009. It's hard to feel confident about the resilience of society when it's 115°F, the air is choked with smoke and the power goes out turning off the oxygen machine that your dad needs to breath. https://warpcast.com/schulkin/0x5c17dd1f

I've been trying to raise the alarm on climate chaos since I saw what was coming around 2000, some people since the 70s and earlier, but people don't want to hear it and definitely don't want to consider root causes, and here we are... And I don't really bother to protest anymore because our capitalist system is just rotten to the core and we'll never be able to come together as one humanity working to address our problems until capitalism / fascism collapses, probably under a cascade of massive disasters that become impossible to recover from in the short term. We have to envision a new system for humanity and we have to work on developing it to have any chance of survival. We're going to need to focus much less on competing with each other and much more on helping each other survive.

You mean people blaming DEI for the fires and destruction doesn't help us resolve the actual underlying issue at hand? Late stage capitalism sucks.

i can barely comprehend it. seems so much worse than it should have been, surely some people were sounding alarm about it.
