Lately, I've been more active on Bluesky (different topic, different anon), and it's growing pretty fast. Given Elon has oriented Twitter towards anti-intellectualism, certain communities have moved wholesale already, particularly academia related. It's basically just Twitter without the bloat, but slower still... Farcaster is more interesting to me, but Bluesky has won the attention game - no one knows Farcaster exists outside the niche crypto crowd.

What's your anon trust assumption? Do you go hardcore with a different VPN connection etc for each identity or do you not care so much if a handful of engineers in big tech corps could link two anon identities?

I understand it’s not great for a social network that wants to grow, but I also kinda like it that Farcaster is niche. It feels like we’re hiding somewhere out in the dark forest ;) It‘s a safe space. Maybe decentralized social is also a diaspora to a range of protocols and platforms, sometimes overlapping or for different purposes, even with different identities, like you mentioned. Moving away from the central village square to a myriad of squares and dives and open spaces.

Agree It gives off old-school Twitter vibes, where it surfaces compelling research papers and ideas within specific domains (eg ocean science) Also most of fintwit has migrated so decent financial markets commentary

Yep, academia has been pioneer and quite consistent on Bluesky since one year ago at least. First channels I saw that were from anthropologists, biologists, climate scientists and even really niche channels focused on sharks, insects, biology drawing artists,…

Bluesky has its own flavor of anti-intellectualism and in-group vs out-group dynamics, with the usual descent into violent behavior towards those they disagree with. The way they reacted to Jesse Singal made it clear to me I don’t need to be there.

Not on bluesky, yet. Still on X but only because I have the largest follower count there (of which maybe 30% or more might already be inactive accounts). It's really not a nice place anymore besides small niche bubbles. Most bullish on farcaster, tho. It feels the most "real". I feel like it reflects my _actual_ follower count and I believe it has potential to last long term. But it needs to get beyond the crypto bubble.

I feel like X is going to be the propaganda, misinformation, conspiracy and whatever else platform of 2025-2027. Not sure if they will have enough real users in 2028 to keep the platform live but it doesn't matter much. We need different and better social networks, should be obvious we need to rate content using different metrics. I find myself not reading social networks more than 30min every week because it's 99% trash.

From a technical and product perspective, Bluesky is uninteresting to me. It's just an Elon-free Twitter clone with very few distinct features. It's allegedly open and programmable, but is there a dev community? Have they built anything? What makes farcaster exciting to me is the dev community building agents, games, frames, actions, and apps.
