Software is ephemeral because it is built on an ever-changing substrate. Hardware evolves, operating systems evolve — the needs themselves may change. You can fork the code and keep it alive for a little while, but it won't be maintained forever.

Isn't the idea of programmable blockchains to provide this very concept (an immutable substrate to build forever applications on)? I realize Skiff isn't purely onchain, but so close...
