Regardless of ownership, the free press has to be free. You can get self censorship from private ownership of the media too, particularly if a story directly benefits the owner's bottomline. Give me an owner of a media company who has the guts to push back on comfortable and established narratives any day over some bean counter looking solely at ad/subscriber revenue and worried about their personal relationships with powerful people.

I doubt he means PCs and smartphones here. He’s likely referring to the massive compute necessary to compete in the AI business, which small players can’t hope to afford. As for the media, public broadcasting needs way more funding and the Murdoch family is a cautionary tale.
