Regardless of ownership, the free press has to be free. You can get self censorship from private ownership of the media too, particularly if a story directly benefits the owner's bottomline. Give me an owner of a media company who has the guts to push back on comfortable and established narratives any day over some bean counter looking solely at ad/subscriber revenue and worried about their personal relationships with powerful people.

I doubt he means PCs and smartphones here. Heโ€™s likely referring to the massive compute necessary to compete in the AI business, which small players canโ€™t hope to afford. As for the media, public broadcasting needs way more funding and the Murdoch family is a cautionary tale.
