The top plane of the first "Automatic Totalisator," designed by George Julius (1913). It was a mechanical computer designed for calculating and displaying bets at horse races. There are more really awesome pictures of it, at this link: https://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/historydisplays/SecondFloor/Totalisators/FirstJulius/FirstJuliusMain.php#tickets

The great great (..n) great grandson on Charles Babbage lives on this little island I’m on. I bump into him on the beach or at the grocery shop every now and then . @sinusoidalsnail, what space/time folding tempest have you set off?! “BabbagePunk” yes yes! 🙌 Nice one Paul, what a slick neologism. Totally gonna be sliding that into conversation next time I see him 😅

That's an interesting little lineage to a fragment of history walking around on your Island. Do you get a chance to chat about the older Babbage's work? Yes Babbagepunk, like steampunk but with more gears, rods, chains and pulley's
