To be fair, CENT was 1/100 of a COIN (which is what "cent" means generally). A sat was still 10000 CENT.

In my head cannon, Satoshi was trying to build a decentralized time server, and was trying to figure out how to get people to keep submitting new timeblocks every 10 minutes or so, so he threw in a reward system, then decided to make the rewards transferable, and then realized he'd accidentally made something cool.
