Very similar story for me in consulting automating PowerPoint slide creation from Excel. Manager told me to stop doing this.

So what happened next? Did you get to do whatever while the computer did your job?

I was a consultant and did something similar. I was able to get my week’s worth job done in a day. My manager made me sit at my desk 9-5 those other days. I asked for Fridays off and they said no so I walked.

🤣 I once had two humans around the world manually assigning contracts to specific ppl. 24/7 thousands of contracts. I had a no code/low code tool we were implementing. I asked why we didn’t automate the assigning out. Ppl told me it was impossible to automated such a nuanced thing. They legit had a table already built on how to assign the work. I grabbed that same table and automated this process. When I showed the admins doing this work they begged me not to deliver this. Bc of fear of getting fired. Luckily they just go to do other work. Working on legal departments it’s nuts bc that is my sole job now. Love your story btw!

The only constant is change. If you don't adapt to it, you'll be left behind. In one of my first jobs there were some very good engineers but they were highly specialized in a type of technology that was becoming obsolete. Most of them couldn't make the shift to other tech so ended up being laid off. I've never specialized. I'm not an expert in anything in particular but I can dive into any problem space/codebase and figure things out.

basically same story as my brother a few years back. crazy how optimizing performance beyond ppl's understanding so relatively easily can flip their whole mental model of what efficiency is to a point where it's so effective that it needs to be hidden. status quo vs rock the boat / my alpha vs our alpha. 1111 $degen

This is when you learn not to tell anyone about the automation, and use all the downtime for something fun or useful instead. I'm a slytherin though 😅
