when learning or working, the inner loop is doing the thing itself, but the outer loop should be constantly adjusting effort + complexity. do this right and you can stay in flow pretty much indefinitely and enjoy every moment of literally any task. most of it boils down to work being too boring or too challenging, not being aware of that and then committing to doing something in a way that kills both enjoyment and effectiveness.
