we're at 25% of all ETH staked rn. at current rates, it's not crazy to think that nearly all ETH could eventually be staked. that's overpaying for security and exposing the larger ecosystem to unnecessary risk (if, say, a lot of that was an LST) so what kind of design could set a staking target?

I feel like this discussion is going to get quite messy given all of the competing incentives at play here. The research may be sound, but a substantial change like this to Ethereum's monetary policy + the fact that this would negatively impact the growth of staking/restaking protocols (at least, for the short-term).

This @vitalik.eth post from two months ago is highly relevant to the discussion on validator load and ways forward: https://ethresear.ch/t/sticking-to-8192-signatures-per-slot-post-ssf-how-and-why/17989

Bitcoin wants to be neutral payment system but is most often seen as digital gold. Ethereum wants to currency for world super computer, but is often seen as means of security of super computer. I say "The eth must flow!" 25% is enough. ... 3.6% is enough

A target is fine, but I feel like anything that decreases staking yields from current levels will eat into home stakers disproportionately, i.e. their share of staked ETH will decrease relative to LST operators.

We launch a token to put a bounty on hacking LST validators to slash them. 50% of the bounty is paid to solo stakers, and 50% to the hacker. Just kidding, but this is a big issue…
