The Hours by Michael Cunningham, also adapted into an excellent film which got Nicole Kidman an Oscar.

It articulates so much that's unsayable about the value of art, the nature of happiness, and what it means to be a woman beyond the traditional wife/mother role.

It's an homage to Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway, but also so much more than that. It is three parallel stories of three women set respectively in the 1920s, 1950s and 2000s. Really beautiful writing.
