Lots of sound advice in the replies. For how long are you planning to visit? I'd suggest framing Amalfi as a vacation within your trip. Listed in order of priority: Roma will consume as much time as you are willing to give it. Sorento as a base for Amalfi / Capri / Vesuvius. Gio Ponti design hotel is a lovely place to stay if the budget allows. Highly recommend 'wasting' a day at the 'beach'. https://www.royalgroup.it/parcodeiprincipi/en Florence > Siena UNLESS you're going to be there for palio di Siena (July 2nd this year). Evey Tuscan hill town is as charming as the next. Pick a base and try a new town everyday. Driving is quite easy outside of Roma & the coast. Herculaneum > Pompeii (> Capri) if the crowds aren't your thing. Venice before Milano Enjoy!

Best things I did there: Visit Pompeii and hike up to the top of Mt Vesuvius Climb the tallest tower in Bologna Visit Lake Como and take Star Wars pics with my gf Eat all the food! Naples is kinda sketchy, Milan sucks

First place should be Rome. Most historical sites. If you want scenery, Amalfi coast is a great choice. We took train to Naples (worse Italian city I have been so don’t stay too long there) then rented a car, drove to Amalfi stopped by Pompeii on the way.

Most people will say the 3 major tourist cities: Florence, Rome, and Venice. If you think you'll go back then yeah, do that and get them out of the way. I adore them all. Rome has amazing history but be ready for it to be loud and big. It took me two visits before I feel in love with it. Florence will be too crowded but it has so many major pieces of art. Venice will be crowded and annoying during the day but it is magical at night. No accurate maps and Google only works sometimes but you still find whatever you need lol. I love it. But it depends on your interests. You can also plan a trip around food ... like going to Bologna, Parma, Modena ... or if you like beaches doing a road trip around the southern coast ... I love Italy. It's my soul mate of a country. The food culture is my favorite thing.
