but would they return the money to people who already paid their 5 bucks? Although it seems unfair for new and eager users to meet such barrier, I think making a payment to join leaves only interested in this project people here, no? Moreover it kind of stops the sybils to take advantage of the app

I don't mind paying but I can see why others wouldn't (mostly ability, conditioning or self-entitlement IMO). Bills need to get paid though. So how can we reward those who choose to support adoption by paying extra, without it becoming a zero-sum game?

No different than email: 1) Run your own server at your own cost 2) Pay a host directly (AOL, Earthlink, Proton) 3) Let an App subsidize the cost (Gmail/Hotmail/Proton)
