Very high up definitely Carlos Ruiz zafom shadow of the wind. I read it three times already probably.

Also Momo by Michael Ende. The Offing Benjamin Myers come to mind.

I love it. They also made a kids book for the 50th anniversary of it. More simple German, that could be an option?

Recently re-read Momo. Then I saw it in Spanish in the bookstore last week and got it for the kids (their German sucks - my fault)

The Offing is also super beautiful writing.

And the entire Barcelona series by Carlos Ruiz zafon as well as his books for youth are worth reading.

The opening of Shadow of the wind really impressed me. I felt sadness in my heart. Thanks for the advice <3
