Anyone into dog training? What are some tips / best practices I should follow?

The majority of training is accomplished during walks and around food. Emphasise hierarchy (not “being alpha”, but calm and consistent leadership so the dog knows who is in charge). Figure out what motivates your dog (food, praise/attention, playtime or a specific toy) and use it when training.

Set them up to succeed when training (eg. if you try and get them to focus on a new command when they’re excited and energetic, you’re setting them up to fail. Let them run and work some of it out first). Problem behaviours should be addressed early and with consistency. You need to be more stubborn than they are.
