Trap or raise your own rabbits. Make gesso from rabbit skin glue and chalk. Chemically synthesize any pigments you can’t extract directly. Grind your pigments and mix your paint. Raise hogs. Use their hairs to make brushes. Now paint something.

Oh, you want to share it on the internet? Manufacture silicon wafers. Design your chips. Etch them. Assemble them. Smelt copper ore and make wires. Synthesize plastic insulation. Write an operating system and your own implementation of the TCP/IP stack.

Then maybe, finally, after all of that, you have earned the high honor of calling yourself an artist. Anything less is cheating. / s

Grow pine trees. Grow flax. Grow cotton. Hew your own lumber. Press your own linseed oil. Weave your own canvas. Mine your own iron ore, chalk, ochre, lapis lazuli, and other minerals. Smelt your own iron. Forge it into nails and brads.

Yep. Or, to put it another way, the medium is the message. A photograph vs. a photorealistic painting of the exact same subject and composition will necessarily carry different meanings.

But both the photographer and the painter are still equally valid as artists. (Note the / sarcasm tag at the end of the thread.)

So... the process makes the artist?

IMO, it very much depends on the artist using AI as a tool!

For example, @ashira and I each use fine-tuned models trained on our art, because we've developed our own aesthetic senses and want to see that reflected in our work, even if it comes from an AI model.

e.g., this gen from my fractal art-trained model:

This reads more as the difference between artists and artisans. While I lean more artisan, artists create incredible things as well! But artists, to me, create from the heart and soul and genai art doesn’t hit that for me.

Though I'd imagine that most of the paintings (and computers) to come out of that workshop would look like Thomas Thwaites's built-from-scratch toaster.

I agree that it’s the person behind the Art that determines the art value. 

It’s the weird and rare parts of human experience that defines a professional artist from a bot.

A million dollar idea or a million dollar mind. 

A jpeg priced at $1mil or the Artist who makes the mil dollar art

😜 Well, at least I make my own oil paints from linseed & pigments. And put it on wood by hand.  
For the rest of the process , I must admit, I click buttons mostly.  But a lot of them and in a very specific order.

Agree. I’m pretty sure Van Gogh was able to venture out and paint landscapes due to a revolutionary invention: ready-to-use tubed synthetic paints. New technology allowed the artist to be mobile!
