How do you decide which book to read next? Historically for me it’s more flavor of the week (based on a friend’s rec, “You Also Might Like” algos, what the library highlights, etc) I’m starting to come around to a more forward-looking, topic-driven approach (kinda like a college syllabus)

I have a running list of questions or topics that I don't really understand and just read based on those. By college syllabus, do you mean you read the required reading for a topic?

Yea. For example, I find myself increasingly interested in the Gilded Age. I’m thinking about committing to reading x number of books related to it in 2024 from a number of genres - history, biography, period fiction, etc. Almost like a multi-perspective approach to get a feel for the time period
