What happened to long casts?

Was there some point of time were we could write longer casts? Or am I imagining things?

This change was at the protocol level so it's still there.
Don't recall the limit but Warpcast lets you cast with more than 320 chars. Only the first 320 chars will be shown above the fold though.

My recollection is that it did exist and counted double-triple-quadruple etc. for cast storage
