Important topic and great article! In some ways it's not too late to rebrand what we're doing here, if enough artists agree on a new term. I've used "code-based art" when talking with people that are not in the space. This conveys the essence and is easy to grasp, I think. "Algorithmic art" is more precise though.

I understand the feeling, but if you change the name they win. Generative art it’s not AI art. They are the ones that should change the name

Well, things are always changing. And it’s hard to argue that AI is not generative. And my mom knows that “generative” has something to do with AI because she reads the news. I don’t think in terms of “them winning”. I just think it’s practical to rebrand it a bit so we all share a common mental model about what is what.

Completely understand! Funny story! I was invited to a really important event in my city where they are inviting people that work with AI… 🤷🏻♂️ never used AI for art… They read I was a generative artist and assumed it was AI 😅 So yes, it’s confusing

😄 Nice perk! And yes it’s confusing. This feels like a David v Goliath thing. The entire tech industry is focused on “generative AI” now. So there are slim chances of having them rebrand, meaning we either need to live with confusion or pivot to a new term.

That’s also my thinking. It’s just a fact by now that “generative” is associated with AI. And it fits! There is no clear “them” and I think there will be no reclaiming possible any time soon. Also, that’s fine by me.
