Me: "Hi, I make Generative Art" Everyone: "Cool, me too, look what I made with Midjourney" So that's why I've been using the term Algorithmic Art for code-driven Generative Art lately, as opposed to AI-assisted Generative Art. And tried to define it: https://monokai.com/articles/algorithmic-art-as-a-subset-of-generative-art

Important topic and great article! In some ways it's not too late to rebrand what we're doing here, if enough artists agree on a new term. I've used "code-based art" when talking with people that are not in the space. This conveys the essence and is easy to grasp, I think. "Algorithmic art" is more precise though.

I understand the feeling, but if you change the name they win. Generative art it’s not AI art. They are the ones that should change the name

Well, things are always changing. And it’s hard to argue that AI is not generative. And my mom knows that “generative” has something to do with AI because she reads the news. I don’t think in terms of “them winning”. I just think it’s practical to rebrand it a bit so we all share a common mental model about what is what.
