Interesting. The word comes from French, and it doesn't mean the same thing at all in that language. "Avenue" is either "a wide path leading to a place" or "a wider street, generally with trees". Trees on both sides too. That being said, the definition seems curious in any context. A cursory glance at any American city will give you avenues intersecting with each other, regardless of perpendicularity.

I always know what an Avenue is because one euro cup we had a stupid song that used the German word for it (allee - sounds like french allez) and described how it looks, one street many trees. Stuff like it sticks
