well, the book had been written before the world came to realize that china's catching up is much much more aggressive than they had ever imagined. So perhaps the global south would be doing just fine if TSMC really got hit.

I’ve been thinking about exactly this brittleness in chip production: if there is a China-Taiwan conflict and TSMC gets destroyed, how long before we get new iPhones? 3 years? 5 years? 10 years? It might even make sense to buy two identical phones whenever you upgrade in order to have a spare one if one breaks.
