You can be intellectually lazy and “watch stories” - or you can put effort into respecting people’s histories and learn from someone who has made a career researching and teaching it.

What Ukrainians faced from 1914-1945 is enough trauma for 100 lifetimes, let alone what they presently (and unfairly) endure.

I read Gates of Europe too. Good overview but found the general political bias a little suss.

I also recommend some classics from 1980s, usually written by Ukrainian-Canadians

Gates of Europe is fantastic, as is Plokhy’s 2023 follow-up, The Russo-Ukrainian War which is out in paperback soon I believe
