Speaking fluent English is such a privilege in the present day. King of languages. I speak a few other languages but I can’t say any of them are nearly as useful. Persian would’ve been useful 200 years ago but now it’s basically something to impress people at parties. The fact that almost everyone in Europe seems to speak English has also demotivated me from learning other European languages even though some are beautiful on their own terms. I can understand French I just don’t feel a pressing need to finish studying it.

Learning other language mechanics has one advantage: See the world through different lenses. No need to be fluent, and source of innovative thinking. E.g. Japanese relies on way fewer sounds like, say, English (~100 times fewer), so fewer words. Practice of the language relies a lot on context and situations to interpret the same words. Powerful, error prone for heretics. Written language has also formal techniques to “compress” text.
