It’s like a bully who gets punched back in the face but still can’t stop being a bully. Anyone with experience working with China and who has been paying attention to the narrative coming out of Beijing could have told you they’re not backing down. China has become the world’s factory, largely thanks to American capitalism. Now Trump wants to change the game overnight, without a domestic manufacturing infrastructure or a clear plan in place. And to add insult to the middle class, when companies eventually bring manufacturing back, it will mostly be automated with robotics, meaning it won’t create many jobs. Meanwhile, prices on most consumer products will skyrocket. I always thought universal basic income was a terrible idea, but I never imagined that the party most opposed to entitlements would be the one to create the conditions that might make it necessary.
